Everything is in the preposition. Not inside, not away — outside, within earshot of the music, unable or unwilling to walk in. That position is where this entire body of work is written from: a man raised on church chord movement who carries street consequence he does not believe the sanctuary will absorb. The title states the distance without resolving it. Street Gospel is what the man on the steps sings, and it uses the same harmony as what's happening indoors.

What came after is neither conversion nor departure. It is a man who keeps returning to the same steps, close enough to be moved, honest enough not to pretend he is forgiven yet.
