Three words that function as a command, a plea, and a job description. Street Gospel lives in the gap between how a man appears and what holding that appearance requires, and this title names the labor directly. Keeping it together is not the same as being together — it is maintenance, performed daily, usually alone, usually for the benefit of people who will never see the effort. The record sits in the catalog as a plain statement of that cost.
What came after is the only thing that can come after: another morning, the same instruction, and a man who says it again because nobody else is going to say it for him.
The story behind it
"Keep It Together" is the quiet-grief record - holding on under the weight in the aftermath of depletion. It is half-time trap soul at roughly 80 BPM with a key change from F-sharp m11 to Dm11, built on ambient vocal chops, a whisper lead, low vocal pad, filtered guitar and choir sustain. Earlier sequencing placed it directly after "Burned Out" so tracks five through seven formed a grind-to-depletion-to-holding-on run.
In the final album it was held for deluxe because it overlaps thematically with "Burned Out," with the note that it is strong enough to stand alone as a single. It sat in the working queue during the singles rollout.
